Stingless Bee is a rare variety of Honey Bee which is very small in size and comparatively has very small stings. Most of them are incapable of causing any harm due to smaller size, that's why the name Stingless Bee. Due to their small size, they are capable to forage honey from a variety of tiny flowers of medicinal plants and herbs. But honey produced from each hives of these bees are extremely small in quantity and breeding them is also a very tedious tasks. Certain farmers of Puttur, KA belt near the Western Ghats have taken up this endeavour to breed these rare honey bees. Western Ghats Region, which is older than the Himalayas, is blessed with a rich Flora and Fauna. It is home to some of the rarest of rare flowers and herbs of the planet. That is why it has been declared as a UNESCO world heritage site and is one of the eight Hotspots of biological diversity in the world. This Honey is directly collected from specialized beekeepers of Stingless Bee in the midst of Western Ghats in the deep interior forests of Karnataka. Today Majority of Beekeepers in India have found Innovative ways to corrupt a pristine gift of Nature called Honey. These ways include dipping the honeycomb in sugar syrup and/or keeping a bowl of sugar syrup for feeding the bees. Honey bees suck on this sugar syrup confusing it with the flower's nectar and produce honey which is of substandard quality without much Health benefits. Our beekeepers do not feed sugar syrup to honey bees in the hives . This ensures the honey is collected by bees in the forests from rare medicinal flowers of Western Ghats giving this honey a dark maroonish full bodied colour and texture.
